heavy reading

Brian and I are going to Hawaii at the end of the month and I plan on spending a LOT of time laying on the beach, soaking in the sun, and reading some good books. Except the last time I picked up a book (other than the scriptures and kids books) was a looong time ago. I have no idea what to get! Criteria: romance, funny, interesting plot, maybe some suspense, I'd prefer fiction over non-fiction but most of all they need to be CLEAN. No cursing, no funny business.

Got any suggestions? Anything you want to loan me? I'll love you forever.

Go to Mom's and rob her shelves...she has tons of them. She and I both like Claire Paulson and Betsy Brannon Green. They are LDS authors, so they are clean. They are romance with suspense, but very well written.

Hmm.. I'm trying to think.

Have you ever read "Plain Truth" by Jodi Piccoult? I think that one is clean (no cursing, etc) but it is a little sad. About an Amish girl...

There is The Mark of The Lion series about 1st century Christians, by Francine Rivers. It is a trilogy and was pretty good, though I'm a Methodist, so I'm not sure if it is in line with LDS principals (maybe check with a church leader??). The Sin Eater was pretty good, too (same author).

I have A TON of LDS fiction! I really like Children of the Promise. Story about an LDS family during WW2. I believe there's 5 books in the series. but you're more than welcome to come over & see if anything catches your fancy! :)

General series that Michael and I have read together and enjoyed: 1) Fablehaven series 2) Artemis Fowl series 3) Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. All are on the mystical/fantasy side and generally for young adults, but are very fun, clean, adventurous, and captivating. If you want a little more romance check out the author Shannon Hale. I've enjoyed all 5 books of hers that I've read. I also enjoyed the Kingdom and the Crown series by Gerald Lund - Christ's life and time. Sad at the end because it deals with the crucifixion, but has that very heavenly aspect that comes with the subject matter. :)

I vote for Percy Jackson! It's a super fun, fast, easy read. No thinking involved. I have the entire series if you want to borrow it. The Anne of Green Gables series is great as well, but I only own the first one.

Hmm...

Not sure about the cursing thing. But one of my all time favorite books is East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

I like Mary Higgins Clark a lot. Clean, some romance (a little) and a mystery. A woman is always central as the hero who figures things out. I have a lot of her stuff, let me know if you want to borrow it. All paperbacks, so easy to travel. :)

John Grisham. Love him. The Appeal, the Firm, The Partner, etc. Also, the Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom-- great book and it provides for lots of learning. Um... CS Lewis classics are fun-- mere christianity, the four loves, the problem of pain, screwtape letters....
I also agree with the Percy Jackson thingy.

You never read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I vote for that! Just having Brian give you a synopsis of what happened isn't good enough! And you still have my copy so you're set. :) Or I can just bring over the CDs and you can put it on your iPod.

Percy Jackson is a really fast read, I agree!

How about Jane Austen meets Magic in "Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot" by Wrede and Stevermer? A lot of fun and a quick read. There are two more books in the series. The middle ones okay, and the last one's better than the second one, but the first one you would probably enjoy.

Have fun on your trip!

I plan on bringing a lot of books as well because that is exactly what I want to do. Maybe we can swap when we're done reading some of our own!
