meet patrick

Say hi to Patrick. Patrick was a boy in Abby's class last year, and one of her favorite friends. This year he moved up to kindergarten so Abby doesn't get to play with him anymore. But that hasn't stopped her from pretending he's here. I guess you could call him an imaginary friend.

This friendship started last week, so I'm not sure if Patrick is here to stay or not. Some days he's around a lot, other days he's not here at all. On this particular day we went to the park and she played with him the whole time, helping him up ladders, holding him like a baby, swinging him, and making me pick him up when he fell off the jungle gym.

I mean, look at that face! It's like he's really there!

Oh my goodness, that has to be the most precious thing ever! What a great moment to capture- and what a great imagination!

When my sister Connie was about Abby’s age, she had an imaginary friend for a long time - a bear! That bear went everywhere with us and she would get made if anybody acted like he wasn’t really there.

Mary often has a whole imaginary class that she is teaching. Thanks for sharing this because that last face is a lot like the one Mary makes when she is "teaching" and it makes me feel like this is more common than my slightly excentric girl would lead me to believe. :-)

What a special moment captured by camera. By your comments you can tell that Patrick is a special friend. Abby has quite a detailed imagination. She is so detailed in her play. Very successful writers emerge from the beginnings of GREAT imaginations. Children this age often times use names of people they know in their play. They pretend & imitate grown-up behavior. Such as pretending to be a mother to an imaginary friend. Carter may be asked to be the dad in Abby's imaginary play. I would play along with her lead. Enjoy it now. This to shall pass.

I suppose you've figured out "what are you thinking little girl?" She was just looking for Patrick! Now that he's found, all must be right in the world.
