enlarged vestibular aqueduct

We got Abby's MRI results today. I was honestly expecting him to tell me they were normal.... but he didn't. She has an enlarged vestibular aqueduct in her right ear only, and its difficult to explain what it is, so click on the link if you want to learn more. But basically its a condition that will more than likely cause Abby to lose more hearing in her right ear, and possibly all of it. It doesn't explain the loss in her other ear, and Carter doesn't have the same thing, so there is obviously an additional reason for their hearing loss. We're hoping its the basic, nonsyndromatic genetic hearing loss (connexin 26) and the genetic tests that we did today will give us the rest of the answers we need, and we should get those in about a month. This discovery has actually made things even more confusing, and scary. Dr. Bauer brought up the cochlear implant word today.

I'm not ready for that yet.

Wow. I don't quite know what to say. I'm glad that you have found at least one source of the hearing loss. I hope you are able to find out about Carter and Abby's other ear. We'll keep you in our prayers. Man, the weather today is certainly appropriate, isn't it?

Wow! How confusing. I hope the genetic tests are more definitive. A doctor once recommended a cochlear implant for Kim, but we ended up not doing it. One reason is that the cochlear implant surgery destroys whatever hearing the person has left and we were not willing to give that up. That will be a tough decision, if it comes up. I think that you are absolutely doing the best thing possible by teaching both of the kids sign language. That will prepare them for whatever comes along. Hang in there!

I always feel like some answer is better than none. We are praying for you and Brian to know what is best for your 2 kiddos. They are such sweeties!

Wow Mandie, I'm sorry. I know it's tough to go through all this with your kids--even the everyday bumps and bruises are scary. You'll continue to be in our prayers as you search for answers and help.

From the outside it's hard to really understand what you guys are going through so I won't pretend to understand, but just remember we are here close if you guys ever need anything. Your kids are so cute and always seem to be so healthy and happy...
