I just bought this mirror for 75% off at Garden Ridge. It definitely needs some work, but what do you think? Does it look good above the fireplace? What else would you put up there? Mantles give me designers block.
I like the mirror too. You could do candle holders same size one on each side, or two different sizes on one side. A tall vase with interesting brite flowerswould also look good. I hope that helps:)
We have a clock (about the same size/circumference as your mirror)above ours...but I'm still working on what to actually have on the mantle! I really love that mirror and want one similar for our entryway.
I really like the mirror (saw one similar at Hobby Lobby that I desperately want!).
However, I'll have to be honest and say that, for me, having a mirror on the mantel is not something I personally care for ... because when you're sitting, what you see is ... the ceiling. Which is all you can see in the picture you took (at least from that angle).
I personally would add a nice (large) piece of artwork (or if you want to be very traditional, an updated family photo), and then create vignettes on each side (which, if you catch things on sales, you can make seasonal).
Here are some ideas: http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2167938/Mantle-main_Full.jpg
(I could add more, but it was just a random Google search. I did come across many that were nice with mirrors. Whatever YOU like. It's your house, after all. ^_^)
I like the mirror, but Gabby (whoever that is . . .) has a point, If you were able to tilt it downward, it would be a little better. Decor: Grab three candles (odd numbers work better here) and stick them on one side. A statue or collection of statues would be nice on the other, or coupled with a greenish plant something. Think color and a-symmetrical. (did I spell that right?)
Agreed! I like the mirror idea, but they never show anything interesting. This mirror is VERY cool. But too small for the space it has to fill... Don't know where to steer you for above-the-mantel-decor, but I do have a suggestion for the mirror. One of my associates is really in to creative things like making a very elegant-looking dress out of two tuxedo shirts. Creative? YES! So I was perusing her magazine and found a way to decorate a mirror. It would take a lot of work (in my opinion) but it is VERY cool. 1. You smash ceramic plates of various colors and use those pieces to make a mosaic of some kind. 2. Score your wood so that the gorilla glue seeps in deeper. 3. Place glue and mosaic pieces on the wood. 4. Fill in the holes with grout 5. Clean grout using a moist paper towel. Like I said, it sounds like a lot of work. But I am sure that most people really do make fast work of it. :)
I have almost the same mirror and the same looking fireplace. I am constantly changing up mantle decor every season, but I can send you a photo of what mine looks like now. email is kskinner@new.rr.com
Here is a great idea from HGTV. Love that channel. They always give me great suggestions. The first link is pictures of a makeover they did. It lists where they purchased everything. The second link is the video showing the changes. The design is simple but elegant.
I'm going to be really obnoxious here...A house that is filled up with stuff that people buy to quickly "decorate" a house is a shell. It's just reflects the latest decorating fads and one day becomes crap that no one wants to buy at a garage sale.
The mirror is beautiful. (I would hang it so it reflects the room not the ceiling...You can hang it low so it looks like it is resting on the mantle if that is the look you are going for.) Now take your time on the rest. No hurry. Slowly fill your home with things that have meaning to you and will one day have meaning for your children and grandchildren. That is not to say that you can't look at books or magazines to get an idea for how to arrange stuff, just don't go buy stuff that will become garbage someday. Make it count. Make it reflect you and your interests and life.

I really like the mirror! Hmm...I'll have to get back to you about what else should be there. But just having that mirror is a big improvement!

I like the mirror, but as for suggestions I'm out. We have the tv above the mantle and pictures across.

There, I'll get off of my soapbox now.

Don't just look at mantles, check out dresser and sideboards for applicable examples.
